iPhone 3G goodness

July 18, 2008

It’s here! It’s here! My iPhone 3G arrived today. I was told it would arrive during the first week of August (which would have been too late), so I was pleasantly surprised to have received this little package today. I chose the white version because it’s less prone to fingerprint smudges, and it’s a little more exclusive (only available in 16GB model). It looks great too!

Without further ado, the white iPhone 3G. Photos taken with the Nikon D80.

3G is much faster than EDGE and approaches Wifi speeds. My 6GB data plan will come in handy.

Then you should get the $30/6GB data plan from Rogers/Fido (and the iPhone to match)! I just added it to my account this morning. It’s cheaper than the price of a morning cup of coffee or buying the newspaper. Since this is GSM, you may even use your phone as a wireless modem for your laptop. No more having to find a wifi hotspot (which is not cheap anyways..). Oh, did I mention, I can use this anywhere in Canada without any roaming fees!

To really get a good idea of how great a deal this new promotional plan is, one only needs to take a quick look at Roger’s other offerings. The next cheapest plan is $15 for 2MB (that’s not a typo), $30 will get you 300MB (same price!) and the next plan up is $50 for 500MB (again, not a typo).

For once, Canadians lucked out with a killer data plan. Offer ends Aug 31. Don’t let this one slip by.

There are 100 of them and 50 different photos. You can even make each card unique but I opted not to do that since I wanted multiple copies of certain photos. The back side contains my contact info.

Some of my photos didn’t quite crop correctly though, but it’s ok.

A Skype birthday

A Skype birthday

A few of us went to go biking at Stanley Park yesterday and just when we got there, this massive group of bikers started blocking traffic and took over the road. There must have been at least a couple thousand of them. Traffic was held up for 20+ minutes as the bikers made their way through.

I’d hate to be one of those people stuck in their car in the 30 degree heat!

This video was taken at the intersection of Denman and West Georgia.

Critical Mass is a grassroots reclamation of public space — a bike ride and skate — held the last Friday of every month. You are invited to enjoy the safety and comfort in the car-free space that we create by simply riding together! Bicycles, skateboards, rollerskates, self propelled couches, and any other form of human powered locomotion are all welcomed!
A photo I took at Stanley Park, in sepia like my latest set.

In 30 days, I’ll be leeeeeeeaving on a jet plane. Soon, my new home will be where this pin is on Google Maps:

Stockholm Google Maps

A few interesting facts I’ve learned about Sweden:

  • Bed sizes are different in Europe than North America (or UK and Australia)
  • Business hours are 10am-3pm
  • The exchange rate was $1 USD = 11 SEK in 2002, but is now $1 USD = 6 SEK – making everything ~50% more expensive in just 5 years. I hope it doesn’t continue to fall!
  • VAT is 25% (!!) – if the exchange rate wasn’t bad enough
  • 911 is 112
  • Famous Swedes include: Annika Sörenstam (thanks Dad!), Tiger Wood’s wife/former nanny, Robyn (thanks Ken!), ABBA, a bunch of Canucks players – including Naslund and the Sedin twins, Alfred Nobel, Carl Linnaeus
  • Famous companies: Ikea, H&M, Ericsson, Volvo, Absolut Vodka
  • Other famous Swedish things: Swedish meatballs, Swedish massage
  • They throw crayfish parties in August
  • They like to eat fermented herring (looks kind of gross)
  • A ton of men have Lars as their first name (just from my personal observation)
  • 24 hour sunlight during the summer and 24 hour darkness during winter
  • There’s an ice hotel (!!) in northern Sweden during the winter months
Plus more but that’s all I can think of for now.

Oh and yes, this is post #300!

Choosing a calculator: TI BA II Plus « Road to CFA

Aside from the textbooks, there is one other item that you will get to know very intimately when studying for the CFA exams: your financial calculator. The CFA Institute lets you choose between two models: the Texas Instruments BA II Plus (or its Professional variant) and the Hewlett Packard 12C.

Unless you are already accustomed to the HP 12C, the de facto standard when it comes to financial calculators, most people will recommend the TI BA II Plus. I had the chance to try the HP 12C, on my iPhone no less (there’s an emulator available for download). The first thing I noticed was that I couldn’t figure out how to use it! Adding or subtracting didn’t seem to work, nor did any other basic mathematical function. At first, I thought my iPhone was just acting up (crazy, I know) but I later found out that the HP uses something called the RPN (Reverse Polish notation). To add 1 and 2 together, you would type in “1 2 +” instead of “1 + 2″. It gets even more complicated when you have multiple operations. On top of that, it has a slower processor (HP opted not to make any changes since its first release in the early 80’s) and more expensive.

This is my other blog. I might post updates here once in a while.

UBC 5k run shirt

May 22, 2008

I picked up my t-shirt for the 5k run I’m doing on the weekend. Oh UBC, you’re so clever – you bring out my inner nerd.

How I Met Your Mother is a bit like Friends, but much better (and more adult-oriented). Both are about a group of friends who live in New York City, and the plot revolves around their various relationships. As the title implies, the show is about the main character, Ted, telling his kids the story of how he met their mother. I don’t want to give too much away, so I’ll just mention my favourite character: Barney Stinson. Barney is Ted’s witty, suit-wearing, iPhone-touting, womanizing friend. He has the craziest (and funniest) ideas and he is not afraid to share his opinions with anyone. He is the comedic genius in this series. Barney is played by Neil Patrick Harries of Doogie Houser fame – who is actually gay in real life but you definitely cannot tell judging by the character he plays. Oh, Barney also has a blog and writes about tips on seducing women.

Anyways, it deserves a watch. My advise would be to watch the episodes sequentially from season one as there are a lot of (funny) references made from past episodes. I thought it was mediocre until I started watching from the beginning. Luckily, my sister had all the episodes on her computer. The season finale just aired tonight and WOW! I can definitely say that this is one of the best TV shows out there.

(The long awaited Doogie Houser reference.)

Friday’s beach party at Locarno Beach. The weather report said it was 33 degrees yesterday. Summer is here! (It’s the same one I Facebook’d on the “secret” IT group.)

This was just a short video I put together when I was testing my new camera last week. It was at the Japanese garden at UBC.

A great piece of artwork we had a lot of fun making this morning. I work in IT, the rest should be self-explanatory. Go Team Apple!
