Stranger Than Fiction

June 3, 2008

Every so often comes a movie that absolutely blows me away that I’m almost lost for words (almost!). I watched Stranger Than Fiction earlier tonight and I was so pleasantly surprised at how brilliant the script was. It was original, funny, charming… almost too good to come out of a movie starring Will Ferrell. Before seeing this film, I would have said that I loathed Will Ferrell and any of the cheesy subpar comedies that he has ever appeared in. But now, I just wonder why he doesn’t do more films like this. He clearly has the talent. The rest of the cast was equally fantastic.

I don’t want to give any of the plot away because I saw it not knowing a thing about the movie, and I would highly suggest the same to those interested in seeing this film. Trust me, it’s well worth it.

Two thumbs up.

Thanks Geoff!

globeandmail.com: Indiana Jones unearths box office gold

LOS ANGELES — Indiana Jones unearthed box office gold at U.S. and Canadian theatres with a performance that puts the film on track to become the second biggest Memorial Day movie opening ever, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The fourth instalment of the whip-cracking professor’s exploits, “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” grossed an estimated $101-million (U.S.) from Friday to Sunday, plus $25-million from its opening Thursday, distributor Paramount Pictures said. The company expects it to earn another $25-million on Monday.

I saw Indiana Jones today and it wasn’t great. I liked Iron Man a lot better.

‘Iron Man’ Is Impressive at the Box Office in Its Opening Weekend – New York Times

LOS ANGELES — “Iron Man” blasted into the box office stratosphere over the weekend, selling an estimated $100.8 million in tickets at North American theaters and almost certainly establishing a new movie franchise for Marvel Entertainment.

“The word of mouth through the weekend was tremendous,” said David Maisel, chairman of Marvel Studios, the New York entertainment company’s newly created film production unit. “I can’t think of a better start.”

I watched Iron Man today and I must say, it was pretty damn good! BTW, if you’re planning to watch it, make sure you stay after the closing credits – there’s a bonus scene at the end. The next on my watch list is the new India Jones.

Congress passes anti-genetic discrimination bill

WASHINGTON (AP) — Congress sent President Bush a bill Thursday forbidding employers and insurance companies from using genetic tests showing people are at risk of developing cancer, heart disease or other ailments to reject their job applications, promotions or health care coverage, or in setting premiums.

Bush was expected soon to sign the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act, which lawmakers and advocates called “the first major civil rights act of the 21st century.” Federal law already bans discrimination by race and gender.

“Your skin color, your gender, all of those are part of your DNA,” said Francis Collins, head of the National Human Genome Research Institute. “Shouldn’t the rest of your DNA also fall under that protective umbrella?”

This reminded me of Gattaca, which I watched (again) the other night – this time in full HD glory. There’s only a handful of movies worth watching more than once, this is one of them.
